There is a rising sense of optimism regarding the highly anticipated IndiaPakistan match on February 15, 2026, as part of the T20 World Cup in Colombo. Discussions between the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are reportedly on a positive track, following recent tensions surrounding Pakistan’s participation.

Negotiations and Challenges

ICC and PCB dialogues were initiated after the latter cast doubt over Pakistan’s participation following Bangladesh’s exclusion. This exclusion was due to Bangladesh’s refusal to play in India over security concerns. Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, had expressed solidarity with Bangladesh, resulting in an initial boycott threat against the India match. The government of Pakistan subsequently announced Pakistan would play in the tournament but would not take the field in the group game against India.

Recently, ICC deputy chair Imran Khawaja was in Lahore for talks with PCB officials and, significantly, with Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam. The meetings are aimed at resolving these issues and potentially reaching an agreement that facilitates the awaited fixture. The PCB has strongly voiced concerns over perceived double standards in Bangladesh’s case, which it believes have not been fully addressed.

Conditions and Future Implications

Pakistan’s agreement to play hinges on several conditions, including assurances over Bangladesh’s future as a co-host of the 2031 Men’s ODI World Cup and maintaining their revenue share. Discussions are ongoing about a fairer revenue distribution by the ICC, which is a critical aspect of Pakistan’s negotiation stance.

Despite rumors, the PCB has denied any conditions regarding restoring bilateral cricket ties or mandatory player interactions such as handshakes between India and Pakistan. Nothing has been finalised yet and discussions are expected to continue. Both sides have won their first group games. Pakistan’s second group match is against the USA on Tuesday, while India play Namibia on Thursday.
