In a significant move for women’s cricket in India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a rise in match fees for domestic players. The decision, made during an Apex Council meeting in Mumbai on Monday, will see players in the senior competitions’ first XIs earning INR 50,000 per day, a substantial increase from the previous INR 20,000. Reserve players will also benefit, receiving INR 25,000 per day.

The BCCI’s changes extend beyond senior competitions. Age-group players will now earn INR 25,000 per day if in the first XIs, and INR 12,500 for those in the reserves. Previously, these amounts were INR 10,000 and INR 5,000, respectively. This revision will see the total seasonal earnings potentially increase from a little over INR 2 lakh to around INR 5 lakh for those involved in all league matches, including finals.

Aligning with International Standards

This adjustment follows India’s historic ODI World Cup victory, amplifying demands within the cricket community for equitable match fees. According to reports from ESPNcricinfo, several state coaches and top players had advocated for this financial uplift to support growing talent, highlighted by India’s Under-19 World Cup successes. Last year, the BCCI had set national women’s team fees on par with male players, although central contracts still differ, with top women’s grades earning INR 50 lakh annually.

Fostering Future Talents

The financial uplift reflects BCCI’s ongoing strategy to nurture and promote women’s cricket. This comes in light of increased interest among younger players who have witnessed India’s recent achievements on the global stage, especially the consecutive Under-19 World Cup victories. These reforms are not just a financial boon but also enhance motivation across the domestic circuits.

The Road Ahead

BCCI’s revised fee structure is expected to invigorate the domestic scene and expand the talent pool, fuelling aspirations among emerging players. As women’s cricket continues to grow, the support from the board exemplifies commitment towards the sport’s development at both grassroots and elite levels.
