Virat Kohli Tops ICC ODI Rankings After Standout Performances

Virat Kohli has once again ascended to the top of the ICC ODI batting rankings, dethroning his compatriot Rohit Sharma. This comes after Kohli’s stellar knock of 93 runs off 91 balls during India’s pursuit of New Zealand’s formidable 300 in the first ODI of the three-match series held in Vadodara on Sunday. The match highlighted Kohli’s consistency in international cricket, especially in ODIs, where he has been a dominant force.
Kohli’s rise to the number one position marks his 11th time at the summit of the ODI rankings. His recent form has been remarkable with scores of 74*, 135, 102, and 65* in prior ODIs. This only format where he continues to play internationally has seen him shine, reaffirming his status as one of the foremost batsmen of his generation.
While Kohli’s ascendancy to the top was expected, Rohit Sharma’s drop to third place on the rankings was significant. He managed only 26 runs in the opening ODI against New Zealand. Meanwhile, New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who scored 84 off 71 balls in the same match, climbed up to second place, sandwiching Rohit between him and Kohli. The rankings, however, remain closely contested, with Kohli’s 785 points leading Mitchell’s 784 and Rohit’s 775 points. KL Rahul also moved up, from No. 12 to No. 11, after his unbeaten 29 in Vadodara.
Other Rankings Update: Travis Head and Steven Smith Shine in Tests

Beyond the ODI realm, Travis Head and Steven Smith have seen upward movements in the ICC Test rankings following the conclusion of the Ashes series. Head, the highest run-getter with 629 runs, and Smith, who finished with a sensational 138 in the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground, have moved to third and fourth places in the Test rankings, respectively. They follow England’s Joe Root and Harry Brook, who occupy the top two spots.
Jacob Bethell rose 25 places to 52nd after his 154 at the SCG. Mitchell Starc was the standout bowler in the series, finishing with 31 wickets and the Player-of-the-Series award. His extraordinary performance elevated him from ninth to third on the Test bowler rankings, marking a significant achievement in his career.
Men’s T20 Rankings See Movements Too
In the men’s T20 format, Wanindu Hasaranga’s five-wicket haul in the series against Pakistan catapulted him to the second position in the bowling rankings. Sahibzada Farhan gained among batters, moving to fifth after scoring 51 in the first game. These updates come as players worldwide continue to battle for supremacy across formats, highlighting the dynamic and competitive nature of international cricket.
