In a unique turn of events for the cricket-loving city of Navi Mumbai, two matches of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) will take place without spectators. This decision, driven by security considerations, coincides with municipal corporation elections on January 15. Authorities have prioritized safe electoral proceedings, leading to these adjustments at the DY Patil Stadium.

Police Recommendations Lead to Closed Matches

The upcoming clashes between Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz on January 14, followed by the game between Mumbai Indians and UP Warriorz on January 15, will occur without the bustling atmosphere usually driven by the fans. According to ESPNcricinfo, the BCCI was informed by local police that their resources would be stretched, rendering them unable to provide the necessary security for the events surrounding election time.

While the news came as a disappointment to many, the WPL officials have reassured fans that their presence will be welcomed back from January 16. During a statement, they confirmed, “Spectators will be permitted entry into the stadium from January 16, 2026, onwards, and all subsequent matches will be played with crowds in attendance.” This decision underscores the crucial balance organizers must strike between sport and civic duties.

The scheduling of the matches released in November anticipated large crowds after the packed opening game and subsequent double headers. Nonetheless, once the election date was confirmed in mid-December, the logistics had to adapt accordingly. Following the double-header on January 17 at the DY Patil Stadium, the league will move its excitement to Vadodara, continuing the season with the usual fervor.

This adjustment, though temporary, will prevent any disruptions from overshadowing the electoral process while maintaining the safety of all stakeholders involved. Fans are expected to return soon to enjoy the vibrant community spirit that the WPL always encourages.
